How to Care for and Clean Your Jewelry

Jewelry Care and Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Cautions when Cleaning Jewelry and Gemstones

I have been a jewelry designer/goldsmith for almost tens years now. In that time I have seen many pieces become ruined by improper ways of cleaning
To care for your jewelry and keep it clean and ready to wear, gently wipe off excess make-up and skin oils after each wearing.   Use a nub free, 100% cotton cloth and gently wipe the piece clean using only the soft pads of your fingers.  Store in jeweler's tissue or a soft bag.
To help retard tarnish on sterling silver, wrap the piece in jeweler's tissue paper and place it inside a plastic zip lock bag and seal.
When cleaning sterling silver remember that it is a very soft metal and can easily be marred by a fingernail or wadded piece of fabric pushed roughly against the metal surface. For this reason, use one of the following methods to clean heavier soils and tarnish:
To remove fingerprints, light grease or dirt, add a small amount of mild liquid soap to a half cup of warm water, soak 2-3 minutes, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely before storing in an air tight plastic bag.Be very careful when using any soaking method to clean jewelry that has soft stones such as amber, lapis lazuli, or turquoise.  Extended soaking in any solution may harm the polish on the stone. Never use chlorine bleach to clean jewelry.
To remove excessive tarnish, polish with a 100% cotton cloth and a good nonabrasive metal cleaner.   Be sure to remove any remnants of the cleaner from gemstones and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Never use toothpaste! (see more about this below).

Tips for Keeping your Jewelry Looking New and Shiny

When caring for your jewelry, never use anything but 100% cotton as a polishing cloth since paper, polyester, and coarse fabrics often contain wood fibers or synthetics. These materials may impart fine scratches in the metal, especially on sterling silver.
A polished appearance is the result of the metalsmith's effort to file, sand and buff the metal to a perfectly flat surface.  When even minor scratches occur, as seen under a microscope, the surface looks like the ragged edge of a saw blade and light is bounced in and around those scratches like a voice echoing in the Alps.  An unmarred surface allows the light to be bounced back smoothly, with no echoes, and results in a highly reflective surface.

Important Warnings about the Care of Fine Jewelry!

Always remove your rings and fine jewelry before using any product that contains bleach! Bleach can cause gold and other metal alloys to breakdown leaving the metal irreparably damaged. This includes swimming pools and bathing in hot tubs as chlorine products are added to prevent bacteria growth.
If you normally use specially purchased jeweler's cloths to keep your jewelry clean and shiny, be sure to use fresh cloths since the dirt and grit left on the cloth from a previous use will now leave scrapes and pits in the piece you are trying to clean and polish.
Never use toothpaste or other abrasives to clean metal or stones.  You will find countless websites that recommend toothpaste as a cleaner, but this is not an accepted practice by fine jewelers. Although the abrasives in toothpaste are great for your teeth, they can damage the surface of the metal requiring the skill of a professional to buff and refinish. Toothpaste will also scuff the surface on amber, lapis, turquoise and other soft stones resulting in the fine polish which was produced by the skilled lapidary to be permanently marred.
Ultrasonic Cleaners
Ultrasonic cleaners are great for cleaning some jewelry but they can damage many gemstones and the chemicals are not recommended for pearls and many other fine stones. Repeated use can also loosen the settings and you could lose your precious gems.

Other Common Chemicals and Solutions to Avoid

Besides chlorine bleach, denatured alcohol, turpentine, acetone, and ammonia can cause harm.  These chemicals can dull or even pit the surface on softer gemstones.  Petroleum based products can actually "melt" amber if allowed to remain on the stone and they can do significant damage to pearls.

Gems requiring special care:

Opals require special care. Never use an ultrasonic, never use chemicals and avoid heat. Don't put your opal ring on the window sill when washing your hands or the dishes as strong sunlight can dry out the water in opals which could cause hazing or color change.
Pearls. Protect from scratches; perfumes and household chemicals which can wear away the nacre or cause color change.
Soft stones like lapis, malachite, turquoise, amber and opals can easily be scratched by pin stems and the edges of other jewelry. Protect pieces with these gemstones by wrapping them in jeweler's tissue and storing separately.

Hope this helps!

How to add holes to your lovely beetle wings.

I have been using beetle wings for my jewelry since I was given a very lovely necklace made by a coworker's daughter about 8 years ago. At that time I had seen a few different type of bugs set in resin in a few different places but nothing that had just the wings.
I started buying jewelry with the wings and took it apart so I can use the wings for other things. That was not cheap but at it was all I could do, I could not find the wings by themselves. After about a year of doing that I found a place in Los Angles while picking up some supplies for the jewelry shop I worked for that had just the wings! I was so happy and it was loads cheaper than what I had been doing before.

The wings were not drilled like the ones I was using from the already made jewelry so I had to find out how to add holes to the wings. While trying to find a way to do it I maybe ruined only 2. Its overall pretty easy.

I started selling just the wings on my etsy supply shop and have been asked many times how drill the wings so here is a few ways of doing it.

You can use a drill press.
Use the a drill size that fits your craft need.
Flip the wings over so you are drilling on brown side of the wing and press down.

You can use an exacto knife.
This is my favorite way of doing it.
Flip the wing over and start to twist the knife slowly and firmly in a circle pressing down little by little as you twist so the hole gets bigger as you go. Stop when you have reached the size you are happy with.

You can use a needle.
This is the slowest way of doing it, I personally have not tried it this way but I have seen it done and the hold are nice and clean.
You will need to boil your wings for a moment in water and then poke the wing with a needle. You can roll the needle to make the hold bigger.
One of my first beetle creations :)
These gorgeous, iridescent wings are shed from jewel beetles.
The beetles have a short life span of only 3-4 weeks, and the wings are only collected after then.
Wing sizes average around 1-1/4 inch long by 3/8 inch wide, some wings may be longer or shorter but not by much. They are slightly stronger then a finger nail.
I love the wings as earrings, they look great with my red hair too!

December Julep Maven Box & I'm A Golden Box Winner!

I became a Maven only a couple months ago. I heard that they gave a few people every month a golden box with either the monthly collection or a big seller but seeing how I have only 2 monthly boxes under my belt I did not think I'd be seeing a golden box at my front door anytime soon. I received an extra tracking number with my monthly box but since I placed an order after my December Box I thought that thing were just shipped apart but boy was I wrong!

I felt like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opening the bigger box and seeing a golden ribbon wrapped around a white box. I opened the box and saw that I was a lucky Maven!

I won the This limited-edition white lacquer jewelry box that includes a twelve polish set of toxin-free Julep nail colors hand-picked by Oprah herself (Oprah is really into pink it seems!) and a lovely green yarn wishbone bracelet.

The goodie boxes that came to my door, I always keep the boxes. They are very handing when you need to ship something, just the right size for most things I need to ship this Christmas too!

The December Box goodies.
I went with American Beauty instead of my Classic with a Twist box and I am truth be told regretting it. I liked the look of Patti (the black polish) when I picked the box but once I got it and have it a try I am just not digging it. It may just be the wrong time of the year for it too though, I have Christmas on the mind and it just does not fit. This box also came with a freebie DIY ring for a holiday gift from Julep but sadly mine was broken when I opened the box. Julep will be sending me a replacement shortly though!
*update* I got my ring, see what I did with it here! *update*

Julia oddly is my favorite from this box, I did not think I was going to like but I really do. I think this color is going to be great for New Years with my add-on Vivien.

Patti, Patti, Patti... oh Patti. I want to like you but you make it so hard to, you are just not a lovely polish.

The foot scrub is awesome, I had my fiance use it and he loves it too. I think he likes it more then me :)

The bracelet that with golden box. I almost bough this for myself on Black Friday but did not, I thought it was pretty neat that it came with the box. As you can see the colors match my engagement ring perfectly! From what I saw I was the only one that got green, looks like the other winners got purple.

The box is really awesome too, it is great as a jewelry box.

I have a tall standing jewelry box but this will be nice to have by my bed for my favorite pieces.

After that Patti business I needed something girly, soft and wintery... also needed to play with some of those colors from that lovely box! I applied Carrie as my base color, Audrey went just before my top cost.

I was thinking kinda a pink winter night so I used Amy as my sky and Susie as my snow.

Amy on top and Susie on sponge, after my base coat was dry I rolled it over my nails from side to side.

Audrey went one top to give it some shimmer and then I applied my top coat.

Clean up your nails and you are done!

Something Blue VoxBox soon to come... Updated!

Update!
It came!  Read my new post here!
 Update!
I joined Influenster.com a couple weeks ago after someone posted about a box they had received in a facebook group and have been playing around with it ever since.
I received  an email about a week ago saying that I qualify for the June "Sunkissed VoxBox" and to fill out my shipping address and a short survey and that they will be emailing me soon after. Today, I got an email from them saying...
"Hi Elaine,
Thank you for taking the "Sunkissed VoxBox" survey, but boy, do we have a surprise for you! Your responses indicated that you're a match made in heaven for the "Something Blue VoxBox"!

Wedding season is upon us and we want to send our best wishes to the bride, the bridesmaids, and the guests, too! A member of Influenster Nation AND a member of the wedding? It's meant to be and we want to show our love with the "Something Blue VoxBox."

This box is all about getting from the altar to the reception without a hitch....but we won't give any more clues, because your VoxBox is already on its way!"
And this badge popped up under my badges!

I was so excited when I saw the email and even more excited when the cheat sheet under the information about my soon to be box.
These lovely brands will be in the free VoxBox that I would be getting in 1-2 weeks!

I have not used the Kiss Nail Dress stickers but saw them at Target and they are cute. I love anything that has to do my nails, very excited to see what design comes! Update- Looks like they are eyelashes and not nail related!

I already use Dr. Scholl's and have been for years, whatever comes from them I know I will love. Update- Ball of foot slips will be coming, have yet to see anything other.

I have not used or heard of Luster NOW but I have never tried any teeth whiting products, I am surprisingly excited for this also though. I think I am excited for it because all the past brides I have known have had their teeth whited, it seems to be on the bride's check/to do list. I haven't felt like a bride yet but thinking about it helps me realizes that I am a bride. Update- Looks like a full size sample of toothpaste.

I wasn't sure what the brand My Trio Rings was and after looking it up and don't know what to expect, I can't see them sending out free diamonds or gold! I am a jewelry designer/goldsmith so I am a bit of a jewelry snob but I am very intrigued, who would say no to free jewelry?! Update- Looks like we will be getting a pamphlet... not sure how are are expected to review it or if their is a discount offered with. I have yet to see anything other then that posted for My Trio Rings.  I have this sweet engagement ring, already have my wedding band designed that an old co-worker/friend will be making for me in a few months & I have already taken care of my fiance's ring. If we need to buy to actually review it is not going to happen from me, it is not needed and their rings are clearly not my style.

Again, I have not tried or heard of the product Urgent Rx but after looking it up I am excited to try it, it seems to have good reviews. I am crossing my fingers I get to try the allergies packet since I do suffer from many allergies. If is works for me I can see this going in my bride's kit. Update- I have seen only headache, they may be sending them out random but again I have only seen headache ones from the boxes. I am still crossing my fingers this stuff works, it would be handy to have on hand for my big day.

Q-Tip! I have been using Q-Tip brand stuff since before I can remember. I do not know what Q-Tip goodie will be sent in a bridal box but it will be very welcome! Update- Q-tips will becoming! I have a few boxes since we buy in bulk but these come in the handy travel size so I toss it in my purse.

Update- I heard they send the boxes in waves so there may be differences in the boxes, these are updates from the first few people that have posted about their boxes.

Anyway, very excited to get the box and see the goodies inside. This will be my first VoxBox which is given out to bloggers manly for reviews of the products. I will post a review here the goodies as soon as I get my box and link reviews on my profile.
If you're a member are you getting a VoxBox this coming month?
What are you getting?!
If not join me on Influenster to see if you qualify for a free VoxBox!
Send me a message on facebook with your email and I will send you an invite.
You can also see my full monthly subscription box list here
and just discounts list here!

Galaxy Nail Art Inspired Jewelry Makeover

Galaxy Nail Art Inspired Ring Makeover
I was cleaning out my jewelry box the other day and I found these old plastic rings I bought at the mall many years ago, I think I bought the at a Hot Topic when I was a little more on the goth side. I didn't want to throw them out because I still think they looked pretty neat but they were a little boring all black.

I was going to do an ombre fading something on them with bright colors but since there is so much room on them & since I'm kinda a huge nerd obsessed with Star Trek I thought I do a "galaxy" design instead.

If you want to give it a shot with some old jewelry of yours this is what you'll need:

Color polish & glitter polish or paint & glitter- I like polish because it drys fast and drys glossy.

Sponge- I use just a makeup sponge.

Toothpick or nail art tool- For the stars.

Paper towel or a place to make a mess.

To start with if the piece is dark color or depending on the polish you are using you may want to apply a white polish or paint to the base to make your colors pop.
Apply your white and then base color.
Apply your other colors without completely covering your base colors, you want the different colors to show.
I would recommend using yellows and pinks too. For the first ring I did I stopped with the blue and some purple, I think the second ring I did with more colors came out much better.
Apply your glitter polishes.
I used a fine glitter all over and two other glitters with a mix of sizes for a more dramatic look of stars.
I used a small dotting tool for my stars.
With your dotting tool or toothpick pick up some polish and start making some stars!
Set the ring to dry. You can sponge on some clear polish or a sealer if you want. I like glossy so I dabbed on some clear polish, it also helped make the color pop.
I like how both rings turned out but I really love the colors in the second ring.
Done and done!

If you liked this post check out my tutorial for an ombre inspired picture frame also painted with nail polish!
And if you liked my nails check out my simple polka dot tutorial.

Thanks of stopping by, hope you enjoyed!

Something Blue VoxBox has come!

I  joined Influenster a few weeks ago, I posted about it and this box before it came here.
Yesterday my first Voxbox came! It was much smaller then I though the box would be, I guess I had the Julep box in mind :p
Anyway, here are the goodies that came... and the ninja that have taken over my box!
The first thing I took out of the box was this Luster Now! whiting toothpaste. It also came with a booklet full of coupons :) I am going to start it tonight and will update with a review 6.14.13!
My Trio Rings sent a pamphlet. The rings look lovely but truth be told my ring is better and I don't think I would buy from them. This was a bridal box and I am engaged... with a ring already. I know some ladies get engaged without a ring or the ring comes later but there is no ring needed in my house and as I said in my last post, my wedding band and my fiance's ring are already taken care of also. As a goldsmith my review these rings as frozen spit as me and my old boss would call em. As I tell everyone, just go to a ma and pa store and get it done well and custom. Even on a budget a smaller store will be more than happy to help you and the chance of hand picking your own goodies goes up. If you have a small budge or just don't care this site will work for you but I would suggest to check out a few local small shops (not mall stores like Kay's it is the same as My Trio Rings) and do a little window shopping and ask a few questions, you may be surprised at what you can find :) Now, if I were to pick from their shop these two would be on my list. They are very cute and the prices are pretty good, quick and cheap jewelry just isn't for me. I don't mind a good deal but don't want cheap. Sadly, I am too picky so my fiance is too scared to get me jewelry. Anyway, they have good prices but scream cheap materials to me. I have nothing in front of me so this review is just off of their site and the pamphlet sent.
5/8 Carat Diamond Ladies' Engagement Ring 14K Yellow Gold1/8 Carat Diamond Women's Wedding Band 14K Yellow Gold
Kiss eyelashes sent two packs, one full and one very full! As I posted before I thought they would be sending nail stickers due to the brand name posted on the site. I was excited for stickers but am happy with the lashes and have used them before. These are cute, look good on and easy to use. They also came with a coupon code. I think this is my favorite sample from the box. It came with more then one to pick from, discount, and instructions. Everything I need to pick what one I like and to get more. I will post a picture soon of them on.
I have been working out and my aches and pains have gone up! Next time I over do it... I will give this guy a shot and post how it went.
Q-tips! They sent the precision tip ones and I am so thankful! I have a ton of the regular tip ones and always forget to grab these although they have been on my metal list for ever! These are great for cleaning up my nails and make up under my eyes. These bad boys will be going in my bride's box for sure.
Dr. Scholls for Her Ball of Foot slips. I have been using Dr. Scholls for years, working years in retail they have saved me from a ton of pain. I also have tiny feet for being 5'7" (5.5-6) and they always are a great fit for my shoes. Love em and would by them again, these will be added to my brides box for my special day also.

So that was the Something Blue box. If you got it want did you like best? Anything you are going to be more of?
This box was sent free to me for review.
